What Is Tourette Syndrome
Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal tic, persisting for more than one year and beginning before age 18. It affects approximately 1 in 160 children worldwide, with symptoms often peaking in early adolescence and persisting into adulthood for many individuals.
The disorder involves dysfunction in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuits — the brain networks responsible for movement selection and inhibition. The prefrontal cortex, which normally exerts inhibitory control over these circuits, shows reduced activation during tic suppression attempts in neuroimaging studies. InhibiTic targets this exact circuit: by delivering tACS to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at the moment of an urge, it temporarily strengthens the brain's natural inhibitory control.
