The Challenge: Preserving Neural Biomarkers Amid Violent Artifacts
In Tourette syndrome research, standard EEG preprocessing pipelines (such as generic high-pass filters and automated whole-epoch rejections) fail. When a patient experiences a motor tic or the premonitory urge, cranial EMG activity routinely exceeds ±300 µV, completely overwhelming the underlying cortical oscillations (such as 8–12 Hz alpha and 13–30 Hz beta desynchronization in sensorimotor cortex).
